Study Shows Sleep Apnea More Common Than Previously Thought

More people are getting less shut-eye at night due to sleep apnea than doctors initially thought.

Statistics Have Doubled

According to a study ResMed presented at SLEEP 2019, roughly 170 million people across North and South America have sleep apnea. That’s 37% of adults.

The three countries with the highest reported sleep apnea cases are:

  • United States (54 million)
  • Brazil (49 million)
  • Colombia (11 million).

Previous estimates put the worldwide sleep apnea figure at 100 million. Now we know that it’s nearly double that number in North and South America alone!

Sleep Apnea Diagnosis and Treatment are Crucial

While there are many reliable treatments for sleep apnea, we utilize a multifaceted approach at TMJ Sleep Centre that focuses on dental forces that may be contributing to the condition.

Sleep apnea — in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts while you sleep — can be a potentially deadly condition that deserves immediate treatment. If you snore loudly at night, or wake up feeling extremely tired — you may be a sleep apnea candidate at TMJ Sleep Centre.
